    Happy Dragon Boat Festival!

The Dragon Boat Festival, known as "Duanwu Jie" in Chinese, is one of the most significant traditional festivals in China. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, it is a time to honor the great ancient poet Qu Yuan and express gratitude for health and prosperity. This festival has been observed for over 2,000 years and continues to be cherished by people around the world.

Qu Yuan was a patriotic poet during the Warring States period who drowned himself in the Miluo River after his homeland fell into enemy hands. Legend says that local villagers raced out in their boats to save him but were too late. To prevent fish from eating his body, they threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river to distract them. Today, dragon boat races and zongzi are two of the most iconic traditions associated with this holiday.

Dragon boat racing is not only popular in China but also celebrated globally. Teams paddle fiercely in long, narrow boats shaped like dragons while cheering crowds watch on the sidelines. It symbolizes unity, strength, and perseverance—qualities Qu Yuan embodied throughout his life. Meanwhile, zongzi comes in many flavors, including sweet or savory fillings wrapped in bamboo leaves. Families gather together to make these tasty treats, passing down recipes through generations.

Beyond its cultural significance, the Dragon Boat Festival serves as an opportunity for families to reconnect and enjoy each other's company. People hang calamus and mugwort at home doors to ward off evil spirits, while children wear colorful amulets for protection. In some regions, people drink realgar wine believed to have medicinal properties.

As we celebrate this vibrant holiday, let us remember Qu Yuan's dedication to loyalty and righteousness. Whether you participate in dragon boat races, savor delicious zongzi, or simply spend quality time with loved ones, the spirit of the Dragon Boat Festival reminds us to cherish our heritage and embrace the values of community and harmony.

Wishing everyone a joyful and prosperous Dragon Boat Festival! 端午節(jié)快樂(lè)!
